FUTURE FUEL

YOUTH HARM REDUCTION PROGRAM

EMPOWERING YOUTH TO "TAKE THE WHEEL"

Future Fuel Youth Harm Reduction +Prevention is unique and innovative. It marries resistance training and harm reduction techniques into one viable, reality-based program spanning the stages of youth development. Our goal is to educate and empower youth and their families to make informed decisions regarding substances. Our motto is "Trust Yourself, Trust Your Power."

We are continuing to grow and scale our model across Florida, with a goal to reach more communities in need. To better understand the impacts of our work, we have collaborated with Washington University’s TA lab to collect data to monitor program successes and outcomes. Our long term goal is to create a mobile classroom that can provide harm reduction education anywhere.

Brianna, of Brianna's 2nd Chance, Inc., loved children and believed they should be afforded every opportunity to grow up happy and healthy. Her death is testament to the fact that the first time can kill. Future Fuel Youth Harm Reduction programming is part of her legacy.

What does FF look like?

Take a Peek at a Community-based Future Fuel class or two...

This was our first class where we debated recreational legalization of cannabis. Specifically Florida Amendment 3. Enjoy some debate clips along with the sneak peek! BTW, the youth gave the debate a thumbs up and it continues to be a FF activity!

ADVICE

FOR YOUTH  BY YOUTH

Our Future Fuel youth are not only participants and students, but have a strong voice as purveyors of their own futures. Their input in each group makes for a consistently better program. They have something to say! They have advice to share!

Today I'm going to talk about not to injure yourself or not to do drugs. You should always find a way to cope, like instead of cutting yourself, draw on yourself. You should not take drugs because sometimes you don't know what is in it.

note

for youby you

If I were ever to figure out that one of my friends were selling drugs at school, I would ask them to stop and I would make sure they are not using drugs. If they were using I would ask what they are taking so I can tell them the effects that drug is having on their body and mind. Then I can help them stop or slow down.

note

Selling drugs at school is a serious situation with major consequences. It is crucial to stop immediately and seek help. Talk to a trusted adult, counselor, or even reach out to a helpline for guidance. Your safety and well-being are of top priority, so let's figure out a way to get you out of this tough spot.

When talking to your friend about selling drugs, it is important to be honest and straightforward. You could say something like, :Hey, I care about you and I gotta be real. Selling drugs is a risky business. It can lead to serious trouble and harm."  Being open and supportive can make a big difference in helping your friend see the risks involved.

note

Taking drugs can have serious negative impacts on both your physical and mental health. They can lead to addiction which can ruin relationships, careers, and overall quality of life. Additionally, drugs can impair judgment and lead to dangerous behaviors or legal issues. It's important to prioritize your wellbeing and make choices that support a healthy and fulfilling life.

There are many positive ways to cope with stress and challenges such as talking to a friend, exercising, or seeking professional help because you matter as well as your health and mental state does. Don't rely on drugs. They are not your friends if they can kill you effortlessly.

note

If someone has an overdose, it's always good to know what to do. In case someone has an overdose, wake them up by yelling their name if you know it and do a sternal rub. Call 9-1-1 and tell them someone is having an overdose and/or is not responsive and not breathing. If you have naloxone (narcan) use it. Put it in one nostril and click the plunger. Make sure it is completely in the nose. When they start to breath put them in the recovery position.

I would say this to my friend if he was still alive. I would say you don't need drugs to fit in, just be yourself and if you still want to try it out, have a friend next to you to guide you or help when you need it.

My friend was 18 when he passed. He passed because someone laced him with fentanyl and nobody was there to save him so be safe when it comes to drugs or drinking. If you ever try to overdose or anything to kill yourself and you are still here it mans you are meant to have a purpose in this world.

7 % of children experience parental incarceration at some point in their life. I was one of them but just know it's not the end of the world and it will get better at some point even if it takes a long time. I am living proof of that. You will get out of the void, it just takes time. Also know that the actions of your parents don't define you as a person.

Hey I'm a teenage girl who is 13 and I want to say it is okay to say no to things you don't feel like is right. If you are hanging out with people who are making you do things like vaping, getting high, or making you overdose, leave them because I been there. Just at the age of 10 I was doing things and now at 13 I am struggling with a lot of problems.

Don't fight. It is dumb but I can't stop you from that. But just know people will talk about you.

Now dating. Don't ever date someone who is trying to make you do things because right now I am in a healthy relationship for 10 months. Take things slow because I used to date people and they used to make me do things I didn't want to. Don't ever look for a boyfriend because God will put them in your life when it's time. It took me 3 years to find my boyfriend and he got me closer to God and I will always be thankful.

My advice on any type of addiction like alcohol or any type of drug. As a 15 year old kid I would say times can be hard but keep moving, keep going. Don't let the drugs, the drink take control of your mind. It's your mind, so take control of it. I took control so you can to. Don't give up.

If I wanted to leave a party and I had to find the people I came with, I would go find them and leave because I'm uncomfortable with being out and I would hope my friends would come with me.

How to say no when asked. Not drinking as a teen is easy. You just firmly say no and make it obvious that you don't want to do it. How to say yes and stay safe? Make sure you are doing it with someone you can trust completely and you feel safe around. In my opinion just say no.
