Harm reduction programs in schools: what programs really work?

Traditional “Just Say No” programs have been around forever. Teens are growing used to them and expect the curriculum. So, what does work? Realistic, supportive harm reduction programs.

Examples that work:

  • Peer led education: students teaching students

  • Access to naloxone and training on overdose response

  • Mentoring programs connecting youth with positive role models.

  • Afterschool programs that provide safe spaces and activities.

Why they matter:

  • Reduce stigma

  • Empower youth through knowledge

  • Create safer school environments

Schools that embrace harm reduction save lives, build trust, and prepare students for the real world.
